Measure the empty pallet from its outermost edges and record its length, width and overall height, with the units clearly stated. In common North American pallet terminology, length follows the stringers or stringerboards, while width runs across them. A drawing or labelled photograph is useful because simply writing two numbers can leave the orientation unclear. Include any deckboard extension beyond the supports in the overall measurement.
For a replacement pallet, also record which sides your equipment enters and whether any openings or bottom boards need to match an existing design. For a freight booking, measure the finished shipment separately: its height includes the pallet and its width includes packaging or projections.
