Pallet purchasing can contribute to a company’s sustainability work when the company records what it buys, how pallets are used and what happens to them afterwards. The useful starting point is a measurable purchasing or reuse goal, rather than describing every wood pallet order as “eco-friendly.” A supplier invoice alone does not establish an emissions reduction or prove that the company has met its wider ESG objectives.
For a BC warehouse or manufacturer, a practical pallet plan connects procurement decisions with receiving, storage and end-of-use handling. It should also make clear which claims are supported by records and which still need evidence.
Choose a goal the pallet team can influence
Start with a specific operational question. Are usable pallets being discarded? Are damaged pallets being mixed into usable inventory? Are unsuitable dimensions causing the purchasing team to order replacements? Each problem suggests a different action and a different measure.
For example, a team trying to improve reuse could record how many pallets enter usable inventory, how many are returned to use and why others are rejected. A team reviewing purchasing could compare orders of new and recycled pallets against the same product and handling requirements. Neither count should automatically be presented as a carbon saving.
Separate procurement records from environmental conclusions
Keep the specification, quantity, condition category and supplier documentation with each order. Record whether the pallets were purchased as new, recycled, repaired or remanufactured, using the terminology the supplier confirms for that order.
These records can support a statement about purchasing activity: for example, how many recycled pallets were bought in a reporting period. A statement about emissions or resource savings needs a defensible method, a defined comparison and evidence covering the claimed scope. Ask whoever owns the company’s reporting process what supporting material they need before putting a number into a report.
For questions about supplier claims, read the wood pallet sustainability evidence checklist. Keep that evidence review separate from the inventory measures your own team collects.
Make reuse practical for the operation
Check whether a proposed pallet option fits the load, product footprint and handling equipment. Purchasing an unsuitable pallet to meet a preferred category does not solve the warehouse’s requirement. Confirm the specification before substituting one pallet type for another.
Give receiving and warehouse staff a clear way to distinguish usable inventory from pallets requiring inspection or a supplier decision. Keep a record of rejected pallets and the reasons, so the purchasing team can see whether the issue is specification, handling or another recurring constraint. This is operational information the team can act on without making a broad sustainability claim.
Define the end-of-use route
Confirm who owns the pallets and what recovery or recycling arrangement is available before including it in the plan. A pallet from a rental or pooling system may have a different return process from a pallet the company owns. See the rental versus owned pallet guide before assuming all pallets can be sent for recycling.
Ask the receiving supplier what condition, quantity and collection details it needs. Record the actual destination and transaction, rather than marking every pallet leaving the warehouse as successfully recycled.
Review progress with consistent definitions
Choose a reporting period and keep the same definitions from one period to the next. Distinguish pallets bought, reused, rejected and sent for recovery so that one movement is not counted as several different outcomes.
Use the results to decide what to change in the next order. If unsuitable specifications are driving replacement purchases, fix the specification first. If recovery arrangements are unclear, resolve those arrangements before promising a result in the company’s sustainability communications.
Contact AR Pallets with your dimensions, quantity, load and preferred pallet option to discuss what can be supplied. Request the information your reporting team needs for that specific purchase; do not assume an environmental claim applies to every order.
